Hazardous waste management

Hazardous waste, or Hazwaste, is any waste material that poses a threat to human health or to the environment if released or mishandled. Hazardous waste can be identified as toxic waste, restricted waste, controlled waste or prescribed waste, including liquids, solids, gases and sludges.

Hazardous waste can originate from a range of sources such as mining, manufacturing, petrochemical manufacturing, agriculture, construction or through household activities.

Some commonly encountered hazardous waste types include:

  • Waste oil, or waste oil-contaminated materials (oil filters, oily rags or oily water)
  • Contaminated water (wash waters, extracted contaminated ground water)
  • Chemical, paint or resin products which may be surplus or off-spec new products
  • Solvents
  • Batteries (lead acid, nickel cadmium and others)
  • Acids and bases
  • Oxidising agents
  • Contaminated soils and sludges (heavy metals, PAHs, PCBs, PFAS)
  • Obsolete pesticides and herbicides
  • Obsolete refrigerant gases
  • Grease trap waste
  • Asbestos
  • High-volume industry-specific hazardous waste streams include drilling muds from the oil and gas industry and mining explosives (ammonium nitrate residue)
